In an interview between Brian Reed and Ira Glass they discussed a problem developing in Homer, Alaska. The problem was immigration, however, in Homer, Alaska they have no illegal or legal immigrants living there. It all started with a decree from their local government after Donald Trump was elected president saying that Homer was a safe place for everyone no matter what country they came from. This caused a massive uproar in this small town. Half of the population supported what the government said while the other half disagreed completely. This caused Brian Reed to investigate the town and see what inspired all this controversy. While there he found what he deemed the only man who did not have his mind made up on the subject, Ben Tyre. Ben Tyre, in an attempt to become more informed on the subject, took to the internet to get a better understanding on why immigrants coming to Homer would be such a big deal. Ben, however, had some reseach techniques that were not good. He found facts and statistics from misleading articles that convinced him that these immigrants were bad people. He was looking at statistics from Germany and France that showed that immigrants, particularly Arabic immigrants, would cause a massive spike in the crime rates. However, after looking deeper into the facts the crime rate had actually stayed relatively the same compared to when the Arabic immigrants were not in these countries. He should have taken steps to find credible sources. You can do this by finding peer reviewed and respected article about the subject matter you are researching. Sources like scientific journals and non-party affiliated think tanks are good sources for this because they have to go through a rigorous examination before they are allowed to be published. I personally think it is completely possible for people to discuss controversial subjects without being biased. They way they can do this is by using facts that have been proven in order to help inform whoever they are talking to. The community I am researching in my paper is also controversial, it is Greek Life at FSU and Florida. I decided to research it because I just became a part of it and I thought it would be interesting to research something that directly effects my life as a student.
